Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has approved an N80,000 minimum wage for Niger State civil servants.
The announcement was made shortly after Bago’s meeting with Organized Labour in the state at Government House, Minna. He stated that the new wage would apply to both state and local government civil servants, effective from November 2024, adding that a committee on minimum wage would work out the necessary consequential adjustments.
The Farmer Governor assured that the N80,000 minimum wage is sustainable, especially considering the state’s progress in agriculture. He encouraged civil servants to engage in agriculture, noting that civil service farms would be established to enhance productivity among workers.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Niger State Chapter, Comrade Idris Abdulkarim Lafene, expressed appreciation for the state government’s approval of the N80,000 minimum wage, noting that Niger State is now among the leading states implementing this new wage structure. Lafene described the government’s decision as a positive step and added that the union looks forward to further improvements.
Comrade Lafene also acknowledged the Farmer Governor’s support, noting that the union had previously proposed N70,000, N75,000, and N80,000 as potential minimum wage options for the state.
