The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has directed personnel to carry out a public awareness campaign to educate passengers about road safety and reduce traffic crashes.

Mohammed issued the directive at a press conference held on Tuesday in Gusau to kick off the 2024 Ember Months campaign.

Represented by the Zamfara Sector Commander, Tijjani Iliyasu, the Corps Marshal highlighted this year’s theme: “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving.” According to him, the campaign aims to raise awareness that crashes claim more lives among passengers than drivers.

“You are all aware that the Ember Months mark a time when Nigerians travel extensively across the country, largely due to the season’s significance, which includes family reunions, festivals, meetings, and ceremonies," he said.

"As a result, our roads often experience heavy traffic, congestion, road crashes, and, regrettably, loss of lives and property. This situation is aggravated by the reckless behavior of some motorists, creating a distressing environment for travelers, government agencies, and stakeholders, including the FRSC.”

The Corps Marshal called on FRSC personnel to intensify efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow, reduce road crashes, and create a safer motoring environment across the nation.

To achieve these goals, the FRSC has commenced a nationwide public enlightenment and sensitization campaign across all states and the Federal Capital Territory. Law enforcement efforts have also been placed on high alert.

Mohammed emphasized that the new policies are designed not only to improve road safety by changing driver behavior but also to position Nigeria as a safety-conscious nation in the global community.
