The Lake Chad Research Institute has had three barley and one wheat variety candidates approved and released by the National Committee on Naming, Registration, and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds, and Fisheries.
The three new barley varieties are LACRIBARLEY 1 (Traveller), LACRIBARLEY 2 (Explorer), and LACRIBARLEY 3 (Prunella). The adaptation and approval were granted at the 34th meeting of the National Committee on Naming, Registration, and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds, and Fisheries, held in the conference room of the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB) in Ibadan.
Additionally, the durum wheat variety has been registered and released as LACRIWHIT 18D (Crown).
Prof. Baba Gana Kabir, the Executive Director of the institute, expressed his appreciation to the Honorable Minister of Agriculture and the entire staff of the Ministry for their support and contributions toward achieving this historic success. He emphasized that without the Ministry's support, nothing would have been accomplished, and he hopes to receive further assistance when needed.
He also acknowledged the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), their supervising agency, for providing continuous advice and support, which enabled them to achieve their research goals.
Professor Baba Gana Kabir expressed satisfaction with the release of the three new barley varieties, stating that the institute is proud of its scientists who are advancing wheat, barley, and millet improvement in the country. He noted that these varieties have undergone thorough research and were developed using conventional methods.
The Executive Director commended the entire staff of the institute for their dedication and support in achieving this remarkable feat.
