Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has initiated the “Bago Electrifying Niger Agenda” in Minna, aiming to overhaul 600 transformers of various capacities. Currently, 60 transformers have been completed. Acknowledging Niger State's role as host to four hydro dams, Governor Bago emphasized the need for independence from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for transformer repairs and procurement, prompting substantial state investment.

The administration has procured 200 additional transformers ready for distribution and settled over N1 billion in debts to AEDC. Governor Bago highlighted a new partnership with AEDC to ensure consistent power supply in Niger State, urging AEDC to protect the transformers.

The Director General of the Niger State Electricity Board, Yakubu Mohammed Katamba, noted that the agenda aligns with the "New Niger Agenda," aiming to reduce transformer procurement costs by 80%, saving the state N20 billion. Atizan Concept Limited, the company handling the transformer overhauls, has pledged to train local youth in repair techniques as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

Project Coordinator Aminu Isah Ahmadu affirmed that high-quality materials were used for the transformer repairs, with a 10-year guarantee. Meanwhile, Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy Muhammed Bashir Lokogoma shared that the state has allocated N898 million for this project and is constructing a 10 MVA sub-station in Lapai for N979 million to improve power supply in the area.

In support, AEDC Chief Business Officer Samuel Odekina and former TCN Managing Director Abubakar Atiku Tambuwal praised Governor Bago’s vision for addressing power challenges in Niger State.
