The Niger Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed start-up kits to over 5,000 graduates trained in various skills through its Youth Transformation Program (YTP). The program, launched in 2022, has provided training in more than 18 skills to young people across six states.
Managing Director Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri) stated that the initiative aims to empower youth for self-reliance by equipping them with tools to establish businesses based on their training. He noted that Niger State alone has 1,579 beneficiaries among the 5,000 graduates.
Addressing the youth, Sadiq Yelwa encouraged them to make full use of the start-up kits to grow their businesses, aligning with the federal government’s goal to create sustainable livelihood opportunities. He urged the beneficiaries not to misuse the equipment, emphasizing that they now have everything needed to succeed, including registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission to facilitate their business operations.
Niger State Commissioner for Youth, Hon. Yahaya Ibrahim Gulbin-Boka, praised N-HYPPADEC for providing such a valuable opportunity to the state’s youth. He highlighted that this initiative complements the state government’s commitment, under Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago, to generate employment for millions of young people in Niger State.
Representing the Secretary to the Federation, Senator George Akume, Mr. Simon Tungu expressed federal government support for N-HYPPADEC’s efforts. He emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to reducing poverty, unemployment, and the cost of living by fostering economic growth.
Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, assured that funds allocated by the legislature would be used to improve the lives of citizens without delays, pledging the committee’s commitment to timely disbursements.
His Royal Highness, Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, encouraged the beneficiaries to leverage this support to benefit their communities. He emphasized the importance of sharing their skills and creating job opportunities for others.
Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago expressed his gratitude to N-HYPPADEC for empowering the youth, reiterating his administration’s commitment to creating jobs through agriculture, business, and handicrafts. He urged the beneficiaries to stay focused, reminding them of their two-year journey to this point and the responsibility they now have to contribute to their communities.
More than 5,000 youth across six states have gained training in various trades under N-HYPPADEC’s Youth Transformation Program, which aims to uplift communities in Nigeria's hydro-power producing regions.
