The Niger State Government has urged the reopening of the Babanna land border in Borgu Local Government Area to stimulate economic activities and enhance development in border communities.

Alhaji Mohammed Garba Danladi, Director General of the Niger State Babanna Border Development Agency (NIBBDA), made the call during a stakeholder meeting in Minna. He emphasized that reopening the border, along with the federal government’s approval of the Babanna Border Market, would revitalize trade, strengthen social ties, and address security concerns in the region.

“The Babanna Border Market, once operational, will not only uplift the livelihoods of the border communities but also help curb insecurity, which thrives in neglected areas,” Danladi said.

He outlined the agency’s commitment to sustainable development in Babanna, focusing on education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic empowerment. NIBBDA also plans to enhance revenue generation, mineral resource management, and trade liberalization to maximize the market’s potential.

The District Head of Wawa, Dr. Mahmoud Aliyu, underscored the importance of addressing security challenges to ensure the market's success, noting that while security has improved, banditry remains an issue in Borgu.

Borgu Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Yarima Kilishi, expressed optimism about the market's prospects, pledging the local government’s support for its development. He highlighted the initiative’s potential to boost revenue and create jobs in the region.

The Babanna Border Market and Free Trade Zone Agency, spearheaded by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, aims to transform Babanna into a hub for regional trade and economic growth. The market is expected to attract investors and traders, driving infrastructure development and fostering unity among neighboring nations.

With high expectations, the project promises:

  • Increased trade and economic activity.
  • Job creation and poverty alleviation.
  • Infrastructure improvements.
  • Enhanced regional cooperation.
  • A beacon of hope for sustainable development in border communities.
