The Niger State Government has unveiled plans to conduct a comprehensive data collection exercise for nomads across the state to transition to a modern grazing system and enhance their welfare.
In a statement by the Ministry of Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs’ information officer, Yusuf Muhammad Suleja, the initiative aims to provide an accurate count of the nomadic population while addressing their safety, welfare, and access to education for their children.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting, Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, Alhaji Umar Ahmad Sanda Rebe, urged district heads and Fulani leaders to encourage full participation in the enumeration exercise.
The Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Statistics, Abdulganiyu Bello, assured stakeholders of a smooth exercise with the cooperation of all involved.
Representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps pledged their support to ensure the exercise's success.
District heads and Fulani leaders welcomed the initiative and promised their full cooperation, lauding the government’s commitment to their communities.
The Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Salihu Alfa, noted that the exercise would be conducted in phases, beginning with 14 local government areas across the state's geopolitical zones.
This initiative reflects Niger State Government’s dedication to supporting nomadic communities and fostering sustainable development.
