The Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a suspect, Muhammad Dauda Isma'il, over alleged theft and dishonesty.
The State Commandant, Sani Mustapha, disclosed this during a press briefing in Gusau, where he paraded the suspect.
According to Mustapha, a 33-year-old man, Alkasim Muhammad, a native of Kano, reported the theft of a Mercedes Benz C300 with registration number DAL68HK, a Samsung Galaxy A55 5G phone, and an iPhone 12 on Thursday, December 12, 2024, around 3:30 PM.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had disabled the car’s tracker after passing through several locations, including Dayi, Malumfashi, and Funtua, while en route from Kano to Zamfara.
Following intelligence reports and a social media alert, the command apprehended the suspect on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at about 11:30 AM at a restaurant along Sokoto Bypass Road in Gusau.
Recovered from the suspect were the stolen Mercedes Benz C300, a Samsung Galaxy A55 5G phone, and $7,000. The suspect confessed to stealing the items under false pretenses.
He admitted to taking the car from the victim’s residence under the guise of refilling gas but absconded instead. Attempts to sell the car and phones were unsuccessful due to the lack of proper documentation. The suspect also sold the stolen iPhone 12, which was tracked to Lokoja, Kogi State. Efforts are underway to recover the phone as the buyer has agreed to return it to the rightful owner.
The command assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Commandant Sani Mustapha announced the deployment of 550 personnel across the 14 Local Government Areas of Zamfara State to ensure peace and security during the upcoming Christmas celebrations, particularly at worship centers and public gatherings.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
