The Nigeria Union of Mines Workers (NUMW) has announced June 15, 2026, as the commencement date for the renewal and update of its membership register across Niger State.
The Chairman of the union in Niger State, Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Wednesday evening in Minna.
According to him, the decision was reached during a stakeholders' meeting held at the union's state secretariat in Minna. The exercise is scheduled to run from June 15 to July 15, 2026.
Comrade Nasko explained that the registration update is aimed at ensuring that accurate information on all union members is captured in the union's database. He said the exercise would provide the government, security agencies, and the union with a comprehensive and reliable record of legitimate mining workers operating in the state.
He further stated that the Niger State Government is collaborating with the union under its mining development initiative to ensure that workers, the union, and the government benefit from the state's mineral resources.
The chairman noted that the government recently reviewed its mining revenue collection system following the poor performance of a consultant firm that had projected monthly revenues of ₦4 billion but reportedly generated only about ₦3.5 million over a three-month period.
As a result, he said, the arrangement with the consultant has been terminated and the government has reverted to its previous revenue collection system.
Nasko explained that while the government intends to register operators in the mining sector, the union already maintains a register of its members and remains a critical stakeholder in the process.
He said the renewed registration exercise would also strengthen security measures within the sector, particularly in view of the insecurity affecting some mining communities in the state.
According to him, every applicant will be required to provide a National Identification Number (NIN). Those without a NIN will be required to present a guarantor before they can be registered.
He added that upon completion of the exercise, any person operating in the mining sector without registration would be regarded as operating outside the recognised framework of the union and may not enjoy its protection or support.
The exercise will commence in Niger North Senatorial District, particularly in Borgu, Magama, and Mashegu Local Government Areas, which are among the state's major mining zones and areas most affected by insecurity.
Nasko also revealed that the registration form contains a secure QR code on both the front and back pages to prevent forgery and ensure the authenticity of members' records.
Meanwhile, the stakeholders' meeting approved the dissolution of the union's Task Force Committee previously headed by Comrade Shuaibu of Borgu Local Government Area. Comrade Alhassan Ladan Bosso has been appointed to replace the dissolved committee following what the union described as its unsatisfactory performance.
The union further announced that its previously postponed leadership election in Paikoro Local Government Area will now be held on July 25, 2026. The election is expected to take place in Paiko, or alternatively at the union's state secretariat in Minna, depending on prevailing circumstances.
