The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly criticized the conduct of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) officials in the state, describing their actions as exploitative and detrimental to customers.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NUJ expressed displeasure over the alleged practice of unnecessary disconnections, particularly targeting customers using prepaid meters. The union accused JED officials of deliberately forcing customers back to the estimated billing system, which is widely criticized for being non-transparent and unfair.

The NUJ highlighted a significant gap in the billing process, noting that many customers are being charged for services not rendered, including payments for prolonged periods of power outages. The union condemned the behaviour of certain JED officials, accusing them of deliberately frustrating and embarrassing customers, even those who have complied with using prepaid meters, solely to push them towards estimated billing for personal gain.

In light of these issues, the Bauchi NUJ called on the Bauchi State Government, ministries, and agencies to explore alternative power supply options. The union emphasized that such a move would result in significant savings, reducing the financial burden imposed by JED's excessive estimated bills.

The NUJ also urged the management of JED to prioritize hiring and deploying trained personnel with strong customer relations skills. The union stressed that better customer service is essential to providing effective and reliable services to the public.

This strong stance from the NUJ aims to prompt reform within the electricity distribution sector and encourage fairer treatment of customers in Bauchi State.
