The member of the House of Representatives representing Demsa/Numan/Lamurde Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kwamoti B. Laori, has earned national acclaim for his pivotal motion aimed at bolstering awareness, testing, treatment, and vaccination for Hepatitis B among children under the age of five.
The commendation was delivered by Dr. Nseabasi Ekanem, National Coordinator and President of the Civil Society Network on Hepatitis in Nigeria, who applauded Rep. Laori’s efforts in driving critical resolutions in the House. These resolutions mandate the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Information and Communication to intensify public awareness campaigns to address the testing, treatment, and vaccination needs essential to curbing the spread of viral Hepatitis in Nigeria.
Dr. Ekanem noted that the initiative has garnered strong support from leading health-focused organizations, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Africa Centre for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, the World Hepatitis Alliance, and the Hepatitis B Foundation, among others. Together, these groups have lauded Rep. Laori for prioritizing the health and well-being of Nigerians.
The motion, presented by Rep. Laori during a January 2025 session of the House of Representatives, has received widespread commendation from health advocacy groups. Many stakeholders have even suggested conferring upon him the title of National Health Ambassador in recognition of his dedication to saving lives and improving public health outcomes across the nation.
Dr. Ekanem also underscored the alarming reality that more than 20 million Nigerians are living with the Hepatitis B virus, with over half of these individuals unaware of their status.
“This calls for urgent action. Increased awareness, testing, and vaccination are paramount to stemming the spread of this life-threatening virus,” Dr. Ekanem emphasized.
He further praised Rep. Laori’s unwavering commitment to public health, describing it as a testament to his dedication to building a healthier and more resilient Nigeria.
