Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has inaugurated the Jigawa State Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee as part of efforts to drive the state’s agricultural transformation policy in the livestock sector.
This initiative aligns with the National Livestock Reforms agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reflecting the state government’s commitment to revitalizing its livestock sector for enhanced economic growth and sustainability.
Chaired by Governor Namadi himself, the 17-member committee comprises a diverse group of experts and officials from the agriculture and livestock sectors. Its mandate is to implement practical and impactful reforms aimed at improving livestock productivity, resolving land-use conflicts, enhancing market access, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
In his address, Governor Namadi emphasized the critical importance of the livestock sector, noting that it contributes over 30% to Jigawa State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"The livestock sector holds immense potential for our state. It is not only a vital source of food and livelihood for our people but also a significant contributor to our state's GDP. Recognizing this sector's importance, my administration is determined to unlock its full potential through comprehensive and sustainable reforms," he said.
Demonstrating his personal commitment to the project by serving as chairman of the committee, the governor urged members to develop actionable, locally tailored strategies to implement the livestock reform agenda effectively.
“We must carefully analyze the specific needs and challenges of our livestock sector, adapt national strategies to our unique context, and craft innovative solutions that benefit all stakeholders,” Governor Namadi added.
A key aspect of the committee’s work will involve engaging a broad range of stakeholders, including livestock farmers, herders, processors, researchers, and community leaders. The aim is to create practical, inclusive solutions that address the sector's challenges while fostering collaboration and mutual understanding.
Governor Namadi also highlighted the importance of collective efforts in improving the state’s agricultural sector and overall development.
"Let us work together to ensure that Jigawa State becomes a model for successful livestock development in Nigeria. This will underscore our unwavering support for the Renewed Hope agenda and our commitment to building a prosperous and sustainable future for our people."
The governor had earlier revealed plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development during the presentation of the 2025 budget to the Jigawa State House of Assembly, further solidifying the state’s focus on livestock as a cornerstone of its economic agenda.
