The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Niger State chapter, has described the recent fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State as a tragedy rooted in poverty and rising inflation. The incident claimed over 90 lives and left more than 60 individuals injured.

In a press statement issued on Monday in Minna, the State Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Abdullahi Musa Erena, expressed profound grief over the catastrophic event. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the victims were attempting to salvage fuel from the overturned tanker before it exploded.

“This heart-wrenching scene is a stark reflection of the desperation and poverty that have become all too familiar in our society. The fact that individuals felt compelled to risk their lives to collect fuel is a scathing indictment of our nation’s failure to provide for its citizens,” Comrade Erena said.

He attributed the tragedy to the escalating cost of fuel, coupled with inflation and widespread poverty, which have forced people into making life-threatening choices. “This incident underscores the failure of economic policies to address the needs of our most vulnerable citizens,” he added.

Comrade Erena commended the swift response of the Niger State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, for its prompt efforts to provide emergency services and support to the victims.

The CNG leader also urged the federal government to address the underlying causes of such tragedies by implementing comprehensive poverty alleviation measures, investing in sustainable energy solutions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, improving road infrastructure, and enhancing emergency response systems.

While expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, Comrade Erena prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens.

“This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for our leaders to take responsibility for addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by Nigerians,” he concluded.
