Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Ngalda cattle and main market in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing at least seven traders and injuring 11 others.
The assailants stormed the weekly market in Ngalda, the headquarters of Fika Local Government, at around 6 p.m., shooting sporadically and robbing shops and the cattle market.
Dauda Yakubu Damazai, a social media aide to the Fika Local Government Chairman, confirmed the attack, stating, “Seven innocent people lost their lives in the unfortunate incident. Eleven others sustained injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital, Fika, for medical treatment. Thankfully, security agencies and vigilantes killed three of the attackers.”
The Yobe State Government dispatched a high-powered delegation to commiserate with the victims and their families. The delegation, led by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Ciroma Buba Mashio, included top government officials and security officers.
Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathized with the injured and the entire Ngalda community. He directed immediate support to the victims to provide relief to the affected families.
“The council chairman of Fika Local Government, Hon. Audu Bukar Gadaka, visited the victims and prayed for Allah’s forgiveness for the deceased and a speedy recovery for the injured,” Damazai added.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Yobe State, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident. He revealed that the attack was carried out by a group of six armed robbers led by Datti Alhaji Dadji of Ngalda town.
“The attack resulted in seven deaths and 11 injuries. The robbers stole approximately ₦16.5 million. However, the people of Ngalda mobilized and killed three of the attackers, while three others escaped with injuries,” Abdulkarim said.
He added that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a patrol team to Alhaji Dadji’s house, where a locally made pistol and three cartridges were recovered. Dadji was arrested and is in police custody for interrogation as investigations continue.
The victims and corpses were evacuated to the General Hospital Fika for medical attention and autopsy. The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the community to remain calm.
