Kano witnessed widespread jubilation as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II secured a major legal victory, with the Court of Appeal ruling in his favor and dismissing a fundamental human rights case filed by Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano.

The Court of Appeal's decision brings an end to a protracted legal dispute that had posed a significant challenge to the stability and traditions of the Kano Emirate.

The court ruled that Bayero’s case, which sought to contest Emir Sanusi’s position, lacked merit. It further declared that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction over matters concerning the Kano State Emirate Council Law.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal emphasized that the principal reliefs sought by Bayero were outside the purview of fundamental human rights, as they pertained to chieftaincy matters. The court cited Section 251 of the Nigerian Constitution, which clearly states that the Federal High Court does not have jurisdiction over issues related to chieftaincy.

This landmark ruling is seen as a significant endorsement of the legal framework governing the Kano Emirate and a strong affirmation of Emir Sanusi’s rightful authority.

Earlier in the dispute, a Kano State High Court had issued a restraining order against Bayero and four other former emirs, barring them from making claims to the Emirship title. With the recent Appeal Court ruling, the matter has been conclusively resolved in favor of Emir Sanusi, further consolidating his leadership and position within the Kano Emirate.

The decision was met with widespread celebrations across Kano, as supporters of Emir Sanusi hailed it as a victory for both the emir and the integrity of the state’s traditional institutions

The ruling is expected to put an end to the long-standing legal tussle, enabling Emir Sanusi to continue his leadership of the Kano Emirate without further contention.
