The Director-General of the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Dr. Kabiru Muazu, has underscored the importance of collaboration between his institute and the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) in the areas of fertilizer and leather products production.
Dr. Muazu made the statement during the visit of a NILEST delegation, led by its Director-General, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, to the NARICT office located on Basawa Road, Zaria.
In a statement signed by Nuhu Basheer Masa, the Personal Assistant (P.A.) to the Director-General of NILEST, Dr. Muazu welcomed the team and acknowledged NILEST’s unique position as the only leather institute in sub-Saharan Africa.
He emphasized the critical need for collaboration in producing fertilizers and leather products, stating, "NILEST has played a pivotal role in the establishment of NARICT, and our focus on chemical research spans fertilizer production and other essential areas."
Dr. Muazu further pointed out that Nigeria spends nearly $900 million annually on fertilizer imports. In response to this challenge, NARICT has tasked its research team with finding sustainable solutions for local fertilizer production, including exploring organic alternatives. "Our research prioritizes national development rather than simply awarding degrees or certificates," he explained. "We identify existing gaps and work diligently to fill them for the country’s advancement."
In his response, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and outlined the purpose of their visit: to explore potential avenues for collaboration in advancing the Ministry of Science, Innovations, and Technology, with the aim of making Nigeria and Africa proud through innovative solutions. "Our goal is to enhance the stature of the Ministry and contribute significantly to the growth of both Nigeria and Africa," he remarked.
Dr. Imam also extended an invitation to Dr. Muazu and his team to visit NILEST’s facilities, laboratories, and production lines, to further their joint mission by gaining deeper insights and technical knowledge.
The collaboration between NARICT and NILEST is expected to drive innovation in both the fertilizer and leather technology sectors, ultimately contributing to the national and regional economies.
