The Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee to achieve its set objectives.

Governor Bago made this statement during a stakeholders’ consultative workshop organized by the Niger State Government in collaboration with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Committee. The event was held at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna.

He expressed optimism that the workshop would provide stakeholders with an opportunity to explore ways to maximize the potential of the livestock industry. He also emphasized that Niger State is already taking the lead in the sector, aiming to complement national efforts in achieving food sovereignty.

In his presentation, the Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, Prof. Attahiru Jega, commended Governor Bago for his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to the agricultural sector.

Prof. Jega stated that the committee’s primary goal is to establish a reformed, resilient, and globally competitive livestock sector. He highlighted that the workshop would allow stakeholders to deliberate on the recurring challenges in the industry and generate valuable insights to guide the President in expanding the scope of livestock reforms.

Chairman of Niger Foods, Sammy Adigun, emphasized the organization’s dedication to agricultural development in the state, particularly in the livestock sector. He disclosed that Niger Foods is actively lobbying the government to establish an animal welfare policy to prevent the mistreatment of animals, noting that such a policy would help create an exclusive economy within the sector.

The Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, Umar Sanda Rabe, explained that the ministry was established to address challenges faced by pastoralists. He noted that Niger State has a cattle population of approximately 2.2 million and has already registered cattle breeders and farmers to facilitate effective livestock development and planning.

The event was highly interactive, with stakeholders engaging in discussions, sharing ideas, making recommendations, and suggesting solutions to existing challenges in the livestock sector.
