The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, recently hosted Lt. Col. Barnabas W. Gowok, Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army Engineer Regiment, Basawa, during a familiarization visit following his recent posting to the command on January 31, 2025.

This was contained in a statement released by Nuhu Basheer Masa, Personal Assistant on Media and Communication to the DG, NILEST on Friday, February 7, 2025.

The visit underscored the long-standing collaboration between NILEST and the Army Engineer unit, particularly in the production of military accoutrements such as combat boots. Lt. Col. Gowok, accompanied by his aides, reaffirmed the strong partnership between both institutions, noting that NILEST’s expertise in leather technology aligns with the Army Engineer Regiment’s needs for quality military gear.

“The Army Engineer Unit of Basawa Barracks has always enjoyed strong cooperation with the Institute in the past. Given NILEST’s strategic role in leather production and its proximity to the barracks, it was necessary for me to visit and familiarize myself with the DG and his management team,” Lt. Col. Gowok stated.

During the meeting, Lt. Col. Gowok also addressed security concerns in Zaria, highlighting significant improvements under the Army’s vigilance. He assured residents that efforts would be sustained and intensified to ensure peace and safety in the region.

In his remarks, Dr. Imam expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as essential in fostering stronger ties between NILEST and the Nigerian Army, particularly in light of leadership changes. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in ensuring security and advancing national development.

“NILEST has a strong reputation for producing high-quality combat boots, and this collaboration can yield significant benefits for both the Army and our institution, including enhancing security and protecting lives within the community,” Dr. Imam noted.

The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs between the two leaders and a tour of NILEST’s facilities, further strengthening the cooperation between the two institutions.
