The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Olufemi Peters, has announced the introduction of a skills acquisition program into the curriculum of the NOUN Staff Nursery and Primary School.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 8th Inter-House Sports Competition in Kaduna, Professor Peters, represented by Professor Sammani Rabo Butswat, explained that the vocational skills training would include tailoring, plumbing, and electrical installations.

"We already have 189 pupils interested in various aspects of these vocational trainings. Although we have approved a small stipend payment, the program may not commence immediately," Professor Peters stated.

He further explained that while the program would be free for the current session, the management would decide whether parents of participating pupils would pay a stipend in the next session. Additionally, considerations would be made regarding whether the training would run during the school session only or extend into holiday camps. Plans are also underway to expand the program to include computer appreciation.

"We want to introduce these young boys and girls to electronic libraries, so they understand that they can access course materials from anywhere in the world, whether outside Kaduna State or Nigeria," he added.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Centre for Human Resources Development (CHRD), Professor Aminu Umar, highlighted the importance of the event. "The 8th Inter-House Sports Competition is an annual event organized to rejuvenate and rekindle the talents of our pupils. As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It is gratifying to see a sizable number of parents present to witness their wards showcase their talents," he said.

Professor Umar emphasized the significance of vocational education in the 21st century. "Knowledge today is about talent, intelligence, and vocation. A child may excel academically but lack vocational skills, or vice versa. We have started this journey and hope for your support and cooperation as we align with government policies to promote vocational skills right from the basic level."

The highlights of the event included various activities such as the 25-meter race for nursery boys and girls, picking the balls, frog race, 100-meter race for boys and girls, sack race, mixed relay, tug of war for parents and teachers, and teacher races for men and women. The event concluded with the presentation of medals, certificates, and trophies to winners in various categories.
