The Maternal Accountability Mechanism in Kaduna (KADMAM) has honoured Dr Aminu Magashi with its Technical Luminary in Healthcare Accountability Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to improving maternal and child health outcomes in Kaduna State.
The award was presented as part of the post-activities of the just-concluded #OpenKadunaHealthSector Policy Dialogue in Kaduna, which convened key stakeholders from government, civil society organisations and development partners to deepen accountability and transparency in the health sector.
Dr Magashi, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Health Budget Network and a longstanding technical partner of KADMAM, expressed satisfaction with the growth and impact of the mechanism over the past decade. He recalled providing technical support to KADMAM about 10 years ago, contributing to its establishment and the launch of the quarterly #OpenKadunaHealthSector Dialogue.
He said recent developments within the civil society space underscore the strength of KADMAM’s structure and its steady delivery on its mandate as a health sector accountability platform. Dr Magashi urged Social and Legislative Accountability Mechanisms (SLAMs) across the country to study KADMAM’s governance and coordination framework, describing it as a best practice worthy of replication nationwide.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Muhammad Usman, Special Adviser to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, commended KADMAM for its achievements within a decade of existence.
“The fact that the world has acknowledged your contribution as a civil society organisation in the health sector within just 10 years is worthy of commendation and emulation,” he said, while congratulating Dr Magashi for his unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s health system.
Earlier, the Chairman of KADMAM’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Mustapha Jumare, while presenting the award, described Dr Magashi as a pillar of health sector accountability in Kaduna State and beyond.
“His technical support has positioned KADMAM on the global map,” Jumare said, adding that the mechanism currently works across RMNCAH+N, immunisation and family planning. He also called for strengthened partnerships and linkages to further advance KADMAM’s mandate.
In his remarks, KADMAM Co-Chair, Alhaji Garba Muhammad, attributed many of the organisation’s successes to sustained support from partners such as Dr Magashi. He highlighted the institutionalisation of the quarterly #OpenKadunaHealthSector Dialogue, which brings together government officials, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to promote accountability and improve service delivery, particularly at the primary healthcare level.
He also acknowledged institutions and partners whose support contributed to the success of the 2025 policy dialogue, including the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, the State Primary Healthcare Board, KADSHMA, KADCHMA and the Zazzau Emirate Council.
Development partners and civil society organisations such as the Gates Foundation, EngenderHealth Consortium, FCDO Lafiya, Nigeria Health Watch (CCSI), LISDEL, ISMPH, BudgIT, Development Delivery Partners (DDP) and Pathfinder International were also commended for their technical, financial and strategic support.
According to him, the collective efforts of these stakeholders continue to strengthen KADMAM’s mission of promoting transparency, accountability and improved health service delivery across Kaduna State.
