A Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State, has ordered the remand of a 70-year-old man, Sabo Mohammed, from Manigi village, at the Minna Correctional Center for allegedly stabbing a police prosecutor to death.
According to police reports, on the third of last month, the suspect attacked the deceased, Inspector Nasir Musa, with a sharp knife, accusing him of enticing his junior wife.
Following the attack, Inspector Musa was rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Bida for treatment, where he was later confirmed dead.
The alleged offense contravenes Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which prescribes the death penalty. Police prosecutor Inspector Ogiri Emmanuel informed the court that the case file would be forwarded to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
During the initial hearing, the suspect pleaded guilty when the charges were read to him and expressed regret for taking the law into his own hands.
Presiding Magistrate Hajiya Hadiza Hamza Imam, acknowledging the seriousness of the offense, stated that the court lacked jurisdiction over cases of culpable homicide and would await legal advice from the Ministry of Justice.
The magistrate then adjourned the case to the fifteenth of next month for further mention and ordered the suspect’s remand.
