The newly established Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Kafanchan, located in Kaduna State, is set to commence full operations by September 2025, according to Professor Muhammad Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

Professor Pate announced this timeline while addressing journalists after inspecting the Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital, which is undergoing transformation into a federal medical facility.

The establishment of FMC Kafanchan follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to upgrade and transfer the hospital to federal management, aligning with the Kaduna State Government’s decision to enhance healthcare services in the region.

During the visit, Dr. Salaudeen, the Director of Health Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, represented Professor Pate. The team assessed the hospital’s infrastructure, personnel, and necessary upgrades to meet Federal Medical Centre standards. Expressing satisfaction with the hospital’s condition, Professor Pate also noted the availability of land for future expansion.

He assured that current hospital personnel would be given a first-refusal opportunity to transition into federal employment, ensuring job stability for those already serving the community.

Dr. Amos Gwamna Magaji, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Health Care Services, reiterated his strong advocacy for the speedy operationalization of FMC Kafanchan. He expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support in bringing the vision to reality.

He also commended Governor Uba Sani and other key leaders from Southern Kaduna for their instrumental roles in facilitating the hospital’s upgrade. Urging the Federal Ministry of Health to expedite its efforts, he called for a shortened timeline, emphasizing the urgent healthcare needs of the region.

Following the inspection, Elder Ishaya Darey Akau, Chairman of the Southern Kaduna Leadership Council (SKLC), underscored the importance of FMC Kafanchan as a vital resource for the community. He highlighted the long-standing challenge of residents having to travel to Plateau and Nasarawa States for critical medical care.

Meanwhile, Dr. Baby Shehu Haruna, the newly appointed Medical Director of FMC Kafanchan, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility. He pledged to work diligently for the betterment of the community and called for collective support from the staff to ensure the hospital’s successful takeoff.
