The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has alerted the public about fraudulent activities involving individuals impersonating the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Yusuf Bara Jibrin, both online and offline, to fraudulently extort money from unsuspecting individuals.
In a statement issued on Thursday night, Mr. Usman Abdullahi Koli, Head of the Public Relations Unit at ATBUTH, revealed that the scammers falsely claim the CMD is awarding contracts, particularly for the procurement of 200 HP laptops, under the guise of approval from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as part of the hospital’s digitisation initiative.
He added that the fraudsters have been using the phone number 08167069701 to contact individuals via WhatsApp, phone calls, and SMS in an attempt to defraud them.
ATBUTH categorically stated that no such procurement process has been initiated through unofficial channels.
"We categorically state that ATBUTH Bauchi has not initiated any such procurement process through unsolicited individual offers.
"The CMD or any official of the hospital does not award contracts through unofficial channels," Koli emphasised.
He further clarified that all legitimate procurement activities follow due process and official procedures as stipulated by law.
Koli urged the public to remain vigilant, disregard fraudulent claims, and report any suspicious communications to the appropriate authorities.
The hospital assured that its management is working closely with security agencies to track, apprehend, and prosecute those behind the scam.
