Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has received the National Unity Torch for the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, received the Unity Torch at the Government House in Minna, where he reiterated the significant role of sports in nation-building.

Governor Bago described sports as a pivotal tool for unity and development, adding that the Niger State contingent is fully prepared to participate in the festival. He also assured that the state government would provide all necessary support to ensure Team Niger performs excellently at the games.

Torch of Unity Symbolizes National Participation

The leader of the team, Ikana Mbora, a staff member of the National Sports Commission, explained that it is a tradition to take the torch across all 36 states of the federation as a symbol of national unity.

She further stated that the Torch of Unity serves as an invitation for states to participate in the National Sports Festival, adding that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a successful and well-organized event.

Speaking on preparations, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Garba Nuhu Ngaski, disclosed that Team Niger is set to compete at a high level.

He highlighted that Team Niger had already won in two team sports at the zonal elimination stage and will compete in approximately 16 individual sports, including shooting, which is being introduced as a new event for the state.

The 22nd National Sports Festival is scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from May 16 to May 30, 2025.
