A tragic incident has rocked Fujeregi village in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State, where a man identified as Muhammad Ma’aba was reportedly killed by the ex-husband of the woman he intended to marry.
According to local sources, Ma’aba was ambushed on the road between Saganuwa and Fujeregi by a group allegedly led by Alhaji Yikangi from Chikan village.
The motive behind the attack is believed to stem from a long-standing dispute over Fatima Suleiman, the woman at the center of the controversy.
Fatima was previously married to Alhaji Yikangi but had been divorced by him three times—in accordance with Islamic law—making reconciliation religiously prohibited. Despite this, Yikangi reportedly opposed her plans to remarry and allegedly insisted she remain unmarried.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated:
“On the 17th of April, 2025, at about 2:00 PM, we received a report that a group led by one Alhaji Yikangi of Chikan village via Lemu attacked one Muhammad Ma’aba of Fujeregi village. The attack was allegedly over a misunderstanding related to one Fatima Suleiman of the same address. The victim was beaten severely and fell into a coma. He was rushed to Lemu General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.”
SP Abiodun further noted that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are being made to apprehend all individuals involved in the crime.
