The Arewa Youth Ambassadors (AYA) has expressed concern over the revocation of the bail granted to activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and the subsequent order for his arrest, describing the development as a threat to democracy, the rule of law, and judicial independence in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Yahaya M. Abdullahi, the group said the decision raises serious questions about the protection of fundamental rights, the integrity of democratic institutions, and the commitment of the Nigerian state to justice, fairness, and due process.

According to the organisation, the matter extends beyond Sowore as an individual and touches on broader issues affecting constitutional democracy and citizens' rights. It noted that reports indicated Sowore had formally communicated with the court regarding the circumstances surrounding his appearance, making the arrest order particularly troubling.

The group stressed that in every constitutional democracy, the judiciary serves as the guardian of the rule of law and the protector of citizens against arbitrary actions. It argued that the strength of a democratic nation lies in the independence of its institutions and their ability to administer justice without fear, favour, or political interference.

AYA further warned that the perception of selective justice, whether real or imagined, could erode public confidence in democratic institutions. It maintained that courts derive legitimacy not only from legal authority but also from the trust and confidence of the people.

The organisation recalled that Nigeria's democratic system was built through years of struggle and sacrifice by citizens seeking freedom, accountability, and good governance. It cautioned against actions capable of creating the impression that critics of government policies or opposition voices are being unfairly targeted.

The group also emphasised that Nigeria, as a democratic nation and signatory to several international human rights instruments, has an obligation to uphold the principles of fair hearing, freedom of expression, equality before the law, and protection from arbitrary persecution.

Consequently, the Arewa Youth Ambassadors called on relevant authorities to ensure that due process is respected in all proceedings relating to Sowore and to reaffirm the independence of institutions responsible for the administration of justice.

The organisation also urged civil society groups, student bodies, professional associations, religious leaders, and democracy advocates to remain vigilant and continue promoting constitutional rights and democratic accountability through peaceful and lawful means.

AYA reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and the protection of the rights and freedoms guaranteed to all citizens under the Constitution, stressing that the defence of one person's rights ultimately serves as the defence of the rights of all Nigerians.
