The President of Majalisa 'Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN) — the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria — Rev. Dr. Daniel Mbaya, has strongly rejected the idea of a one-party political system in Nigeria, emphasizing the church’s commitment to democracy and good governance.
Speaking during the 78th Annual General Church Council Conference on Wednesday, Rev. Mbaya called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement policies that benefit the general populace and uphold democratic principles.
“We call on His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCON, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to ensure that all policies formulated are in the interest of the masses and to avoid executive recklessness,” he said.
He urged members of the National Assembly to remain steadfast in protecting democracy, calling it a collective responsibility. “The press must enjoy its freedom and be protected. We reject a one-party system, and the persecution of perceived political enemies should stop,” he added.
Rev. Mbaya also appealed for the full respect of the rule of law and complete judicial autonomy. Reflecting on the state of the economy, he described Nigeria’s current economic hardship as one of the worst the country has ever faced.
“As a leader, I have consistently urged our pastors and members not to curse the country but to bless it, despite the hardships. We mean well for Nigeria and shall continue to pray for its prosperity,” he said.
He called on members of the church to exercise prudence in managing scarce resources and urged the government to implement meaningful measures to alleviate the economic burden on citizens. He recommended involving economic experts both within and outside the country to provide sustainable solutions, stressing that “any country that depends on palliatives has no future.”
Rev. Mbaya also appreciated the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for his developmental strides, particularly in road infrastructure, healthcare, and the creation of Emirates and Chiefdoms, which have positively impacted EYN and the state at large.
In a goodwill message, the National Security Adviser to President Tinubu, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu — represented by Ambassador K.B. Peter — lauded religious leaders for their role as moral compasses in society.
“You are the shepherds of God’s people and the torchbearers of hope, peace, and righteousness in our nation,” he said. He urged church leaders to continue praying for the President, the security agencies, and for peace in the country.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity, economic instability, and social divisions, but emphasized the need for religious leaders to be active participants in building a peaceful and secure nation.
Also speaking at the event, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by Adamawa PDP Women Leader, Suzanne Mark Zira, commended EYN leaders and members for promoting peaceful coexistence in the state.
“Adamawa is a land of peace. When you find yourself in Adamawa, you can close your eyes and feel secure,” she said. She highlighted ongoing developments in road construction, healthcare, and the establishment of new Emirates and Chiefdoms, promising that more progress would follow.
