Members of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria on Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, in a show of loyalty, respect, and continued partnership between the institution and the Zazzau Emirate.

The delegation, led by the Council Chairman and elder statesman Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR, was received at the Emir’s palace in Zaria on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the Council, Yayale Ahmed, who also holds the traditional title of Ajiyan Katagum, said the visit was to reaffirm the Council's respect for the Emir and acknowledge the historic and continuous support of the Zazzau Emirate to ABU since its inception.

“Zazzau Emirate has always been a centre of scholarship, even before the Fulani Jihad,” Ahmed noted. “Ahmadu Bello University enjoys global recognition today, and this wouldn’t have been possible without the longstanding support from the Emirate.”

He added that the University’s governance structure—comprising the Council, Senate, Convocation, Congregation, and Management—considers itself under the spiritual and cultural guidance of the Emir.

Highlighting some institutional challenges, the Council Chairman expressed concern over the shortage of academic staff deeply grounded in their disciplines, as well as inadequate modern teaching and learning facilities.

Ahmed expressed appreciation to the Emir for his wise counsel, particularly in advising him to conduct the recent Vice-Chancellor selection process “with the fear of Allah.” He offered prayers for the continued peace and prosperity of the Emir’s reign.

In his response, Emir Bamalli commended the Council for what he described as “one of the most credible and successful Vice-Chancellor selection processes in the history of the University.”

The Emir also praised the emergence of Prof. Adamu Ahmed as Vice-Chancellor, describing him as “a brother to the Emirate,” with whom he shares a relationship spanning over four decades.

“When Prof. Ahmed emerged, I thanked Almighty Allah,” the Emir said. “He is the right person for the job, and I believe he will build on the solid foundations laid by his predecessors.”

He advised the Vice-Chancellor to consult widely and assured him that the doors of the Emirate would always remain open to support the University.

The Emir concluded by thanking the Council for the visit and praying for their safe return to their various destinations.

Among those who accompanied the Council Chairman were principal officers of the University, as well as both internal and external members of the Governing Council.
