The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that promote research, innovation, and academic excellence across Nigeria.

Prof. Ahmed gave the assurance while receiving members of the Executive Council of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) who paid him a courtesy visit on Monday, 12th May, 2025.

Speaking during the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor stated, “Ahmadu Bello University remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote research and academic excellence,” adding that his administration is open to inclusive collaboration across all regions and disciplines.

The visit coincided with the national training workshop on recombinant DNA technology and bioinformatics, currently being hosted by ABU. The workshop is organized by NSBMB’s North-West zone in collaboration with the University’s Centre for Biotechnology Research and Training (CBRT).

Highlighting ABU’s legacy, Prof. Ahmed described the institution as “Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan university,” as frequently acknowledged by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He also expressed appreciation for NSBMB’s commendation of ABU’s serene and conducive academic environment.

Earlier in the visit, Prof. I.A. Umar, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, briefed the Vice-Chancellor on the training programme, noting that it had drawn over 55 scientists from various parts of the country. He emphasized that the initiative aims to bridge the technological gap in research and industry by equipping scientists with hands-on skills in modern biotechnology.

In his remarks, NSBMB President Prof. M.O. Wegwu stressed the importance of upskilling Nigeria’s estimated 10,000 biochemists and molecular biologists in emerging scientific technologies. He warned that tackling complex health and environmental challenges depends heavily on “scientists trained with the latest tools and knowledge.”

Congratulating Prof. Ahmed on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wegwu lauded ABU’s peaceful and well-maintained campus, describing it as a reflection of visionary and consistent leadership. He further outlined how modern biotechnology plays a crucial role in disease research, diagnostics, and the development of effective public health interventions.

The NSBMB delegation included Prof. A. Salihu, Head of ABU’s Department of Biochemistry, and Prof. Balarabe M. Jahun, Director of the Centre for Biotechnology Research and Training (CBRT).

Also present at the meeting were Dr. Dalha Kankia, Acting Registrar; Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi Mohammed, Acting University Librarian; Prof. Nasiru Shuaibu, Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies; and Prof. Bello Muktar, Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring.
