Former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Alhaji Dauda Biu, has called for the constitutional inclusion of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s security architecture to enhance community policing and border security.
Biu made the appeal on Sunday in Zaria, during his coronation as the Pioneer Jagaban Sabon Gari.
He emphasized that traditional rulers possess deep local knowledge and grassroots influence, making them vital in identifying and addressing emerging security threats.
“Ward, village, and district heads under the authority of emirs already operate within a structured system that monitors their jurisdictions effectively. Granting them constitutional roles will further strengthen security and promote good governance,” he said.
Biu recalled that before local government reforms eroded their powers, traditional rulers played a central role in maintaining peace and security within their communities.
Commenting on the rising menace of drug abuse in parts of the country, Biu stressed the need to revitalize technical and vocational education to tackle youth unemployment and promote entrepreneurship.
“Strengthening technical schools and colleges to offer skills relevant to today’s industries will not only empower youths but also reduce their vulnerability to drug abuse and crime,” he noted.
He urged state and local governments to prioritize comprehensive skills acquisition programs as a proactive approach to youth development and crime prevention.
“I strongly recommend that the government reconsider reviving technical colleges. It will go a long way in harnessing local talents and boosting self-reliance,” he added.
Biu also appealed to wealthy and influential Nigerians to invest in the establishment of cottage industries, which, he said, would create employment opportunities and uplift local economies.
