The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has declared Babangida Ishaq Abdullahi (Maliya) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the newly elected Executive Chairman of Shira Local Government Area, following a by-election conducted on Saturday.
BASIEC Returning Officer Kabiru Abba who announced the result on Saturday, he also declared Ali A. Tumfafi as new elected deputy chairman of Shira Local Government area.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State congratulated Hon. Babangida Maliya on what he described as a well-deserved landslide victory.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, the Governor commended BASIEC for its professionalism and the credible conduct of the election.
"This victory reflects the confidence the people of Shira have in Hon. Maliya’s leadership and the PDP’s progressive vision. I urge him to justify this trust by delivering inclusive governance and prioritizing grassroots development," the Governor said.
The by-election has conducted following the impeachment of the former Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Beli, and his deputy, Hon. Usman Adamu, by the Shira Legislative Council on March 3, 2025. Their removal was based on allegations of gross misconduct, financial mismanagement, dereliction of duty, and abuse of office.
BASIEC Chairman Ahmed Makama noted that the commission acted in accordance with the Bauchi State Electoral Law of 2008, which mandates the conduct of a by-election within 14 days of a declared vacancy in a local government council.
Governor Mohammed called on all political stakeholders to support the new leadership in the collective interest of Bauchi State.
"The task of building a better Bauchi is a shared responsibility. We must rise above party lines and work together for the good of our people," he stated.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic values through free, fair, and peaceful elections, describing the successful conduct of the Shira by-election as a milestone in the state’s democratic journey.
