The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bauchi has observed with regret that President Bola Tinubu has deviated from his promise when in 2023 assured of not only sustaining but also improving upon the security of the country and it's people.

The State NLC chairman, Comrade Dauda M. Shu'aibu said that the recent brutal attacks and killing of poor Nigerians in some communities in the states of Northeast, North Central and Northwest is a clear signal that all is not well with the nation's security.

"The President and Commander in Chief of the Federation, had on assumption of office in May 2023, promised to sustain and improve on the issue of security and welfare, but recent development points to a dangerous trend in terms of security for the citizens and the nation", Bauchi NLC recalled.

Comrade Dauda Shu'aibu in a speech marking the International Labour day in Bauchi Thursday therefore called on the Government and concerned authorities to stand up to their duties and protect innocent lives of citizens, stressing that lives and property of citizens comes first before any other thing.

He noted that from the assessment of the nation's as reported last year to-date, there is no significant progress achieved so far, whereas the cost of living of ordinary citizen has in the country continued to skyrocket unabated.

The Bauchi NLC Chief also noted with concern that the Northeast sub-region is schemed out from the Federal Government's policy of providing CNG buses and CNG stations across the six states and geo-political zone, as there is none provided for the sub-region.

"We are aware that, one State alone, in the South-West, has been provided with nearly sixty-two (62) CNG stations. We are calling on the Federal Govt in the spirit of fairness and equity to urgently consider the North-East region in the provision of CNG buses and stations to ease the huge cost of transport and logistics among our people".

Shu'aibu said that the introduction of harsh economic policies and removal of subsidies on fuel, fertilizer and farm inputs, increase in electricity tariff, as well as floating of the Naira has continue to be unfavourable to Nigerians, and called on the citizens to "reclaim the civic space in the midst of this economic hardships.

Governor Bala Mohammed  of Bauchi state in an address to the occasion, said that the approval recently granted for the recruitment of about 10,000 officers into the State Civil Service is one of the landmark achievements of his administration which started in May, 2029.

The Governor explained that within the limited resources at its disposal, his administration would continue to extend support to the civil servants as it has been doing during in the past, stressing that the the government is poised to ensure that the civil service in the state remained vibrant and result-oriented for seamless delivery of dividends of democracy to the good people of the State.

Represented by State Head of Civil Service (HoS), Barrister Mohammed Sani Umar, Bala said since the inception of his administration, measures have been put in place to stabilise salaries and pensions payment.

"Though we are not yet there, the idea is to have a credible nominal roll that will reliably drive the payroll, block leakages, improve cash flow management and cut unnecessary spending.

"This will invariably help to free resources to be deployed towards improving the socio-economic wellbeing of our people through the provision of infrastructural facilities and social amenities," Bala said.

Bala further said, "We have in recent years introduced Service Charter contract to be executed between the State Government on the one hand and the Civil Servants on the other hand. That informed our decision to promote the best hands within the service to the principle, so that all can be carried on board."

"It is worthy of note that Bauchi State was among the leading States that commenced the implementation of the N70,000 New National Minimum Wage which took effect from November 2024," the governor noted.
