Microsoft has officially discontinued support for Skype after a 22-year run, channeling its full attention towards Microsoft Teams.

Following a prior announcement, Microsoft shut down Skype on May 5th. The exact number of remaining Skype users at the time of closure remains unclear, but 2023 figures indicated a significant drop to 36 million daily users, a far cry from the service’s peak of 300 million customers.

However, users can transition to Teams using their existing Skype accounts, with conversation histories and contact lists automatically migrating to the new platform. Skype, initially launched in 2003, was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion.

Despite its initial popularity, Skype gradually receded from Microsoft’s core strategy after the 2016 launch of Microsoft Teams, a platform integrating messaging and video calls.

Over time, Microsoft increasingly prioritized Teams, causing Skype to lose ground to other popular messaging services offering video call capabilities, such as Discord.
