NILEST DG Visits Nasarawa Governor, Signs MoU on Leather Technology, Skills Development

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, at the Government House, Lafia, as part of efforts to foster collaboration in the areas of science, technology, and skills acquisition.

This was contained in a press release issued on Wednesday, May 8, 2025, by the Personal Assistant (Media & Communication) to the DG NILEST, Nuhu Basheer Masa.

According to the release, the visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the institute and the Nasarawa State Government aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and training in leather technology, footwear design, and related fields.

Governor Sule expressed his administration’s readiness to support the institute’s initiatives and assured the DG of prompt action to upgrade the NILEST extension centre in the state.

"This effort is in line with our government policy on improving skills acquisition and innovation. DG, you have requested us to rehabilitate the centre, and I want to assure you in less than three months, we’ll do so, Insha Allah," Governor Sule was quoted as saying in the statement.

The governor further pledged to sponsor youths and women from the state to undertake training in leather and footwear technology as part of efforts to reduce unemployment and promote local content.

Dr. Imam, in his response, thanked the governor and reiterated NILEST’s commitment to collaborating with the state in boosting productivity and technological advancement in the leather sector.

"We are committed to supporting Nasarawa State through research and training that will unlock the economic potential of leather and leather products," the DG stated.

The high-level meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including former APC National Chairman and former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Abdullahi Adamu; Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe; Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Comr. Agbashi Anyakwu Gabriel; Mrs. Atinike Achang, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; and Hon. Daniel Ewuga Asele, Executive Director/Wing Commander, among others.

The visit is part of NILEST’s broader strategy to engage state governments in promoting technological innovation and skills development across the country.
