A viral video has sparked widespread outrage after showing a police officer demanding either ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from motorists who failed to present proof of Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) registration.
The incident, recorded along the Benin Bypass, was shared on Sunday by X user Teniola (#Teeniiola).
In the footage, the officer is seen confronting a group of travellers and insisting on ECMR documentation.
One of the travellers challenged the officer, stating that enforcing ECMR was unlawful.
This comes despite a directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who in July 2024 suspended ECMR enforcement following public backlash.
Nigerians had accused the police of using the requirement as a tool for extortion.
The officer responded, saying, “You can make call now.”
When the traveller declined to call anyone, asking instead, “What do you want us to do?” the officer demanded five litres of fuel, stating, “We’ll go and buy it, that’s 5k.”
“You want 5k from each of us abi?” The traveler asked, as the policeman was seen telling another traveller to bring three litres of fuel.
