In a bid to guide students on career choices and inspire academic excellence, the School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, on Monday, May 26, 2025, organised a career talk for secondary schools in Funtua, Katsina State.

The event, held at Government College Pilot, Funtua, attracted students from across the town and featured paper presentations by seasoned academics from ABU.

In his welcome address, the Director of SBRS, Dr. Sanusi Gambo, expressed gratitude to the Katsina State Government, Funtua Local Government, and traditional institutions for their consistent support. He explained that the career talk was part of the institution’s efforts to give back to the community by helping students make informed decisions about their future careers.

“It became necessary to give back by addressing the challenge of choosing career paths, hence the decision to bring experienced paper presenters to enlighten the students,” Dr. Gambo stated.

One of the highlights of the event was a presentation by Dr. Abubakar Abubakar Khaleed from the Department of Physics, ABU Zaria. In his lecture titled “Emerging Trends and Opportunities for Science-Oriented Students in the 21st Century,” he outlined four major global transformations—digital transformation, globalization, planetary change, and public health—that have created new and dynamic career paths.

“These transformations have given rise to disciplines such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, genetic engineering, solar and hydro energy, robotics and automation, space science and satellite technology, cybersecurity, and the digital economy,” Dr. Khaleed said.

He urged students to embrace technical skills, nurture creativity, and remain committed to lifelong learning to thrive in the ever-evolving job market. “Join clubs that nurture your talents and seek guidance from your teachers. The 21st century offers limitless opportunities for science-based students,” he advised.

Another insightful paper was presented by Professor Balarabe Abdullahi, a former Director of SBRS, on the topic “School of Basic and Remedial Studies Funtua and its Role in Facilitating Admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.” He explained that SBRS students are often given priority when applying for undergraduate programmes at ABU.

“Students who pass through SBRS are considered for admission before others. The programme not only prepares them academically but also opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities,” Prof. Abdullahi noted.

He further highlighted that ABU remains one of the few universities offering modern, globally-aligned courses relevant to emerging fields.

In his remarks, another former SBRS Director, Professor Mamman Musa, emphasized the importance of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills as essential tools for success in today’s world.

The event also featured goodwill messages from local dignitaries, including the Vice Chairman of Funtua Local Government, Sarkin Maska and District Head of Funtua, as well as representatives from the Police, NDLEA, and Civil Defence Corps.
