The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to subsidise cancer drugs and treatment services in order to ease the financial burden on patients.
The lawmakers also advocated for free, nationwide cancer screenings, the establishment of additional treatment centres, and the provision of more radiotherapy machines across the country.
This resolution was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary session following a motion moved by Aderemi Oseni, who represents the Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency of Oyo State.
The appeal follows alarming statistics recently shared by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, who stated in February that at least 40 people are diagnosed with cancer every minute globally.
Oseni stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the welfare and well-being of its citizens. He noted that cancer remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with many patients unable to access treatment due to its high cost.
