The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has expressed cautious optimism following the Zamfara State Government’s denial of reports that Miss Zainab Muhammadu was arraigned before a Sharia Court for converting to Christianity.
In a joint statement released Thursday, the association’s Chairman, Reverend Dr. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, said CAN would give the Zamfara State Government the benefit of the doubt in light of its official clarification that no such case is pending in any court in the state.
While welcoming the government’s prompt response, CAN urged continued vigilance and emphasized the need for any credible information regarding similar incidents to be addressed with urgency, transparency, and accountability.
“To Christians in the North and across Nigeria, we assure you that CAN remains committed to uncovering the truth wherever it may be hidden. We will not relent in our efforts to expose and bring an end to all forms of religious persecution and harassment in the region,” the statement read.
The association also commended the collaborative efforts of Zamfara’s security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth groups in helping to diffuse tension and foster peace amid the controversy.
CAN appealed to Christians to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful, reaffirming its dedication to defending the fundamental right of every Nigerian to practice their faith freely and without fear.
“While this clarification puts the matter to rest for now, we remain prepared to act if verified facts suggest otherwise,” the statement added. “CAN will continue working with security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that any violations of religious freedom are promptly and effectively addressed.”
Northern CAN further called on all state governments in the region to strengthen partnerships with faith-based organizations to promote mutual understanding and curb the spread of misinformation capable of undermining peace and unity.
The statement concluded with a strong commitment to justice, peace, and religious freedom, affirming that these values are vital to Nigeria’s continued unity and national development.
