The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Obi Epiphany Azinge, has lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for its developmental strides across the Niger Delta over the past 25 years.

The monarch gave the commendation on Monday during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, who led members of the Commission’s Board and Management to the Asagba's palace in Asaba, Delta State.

The high-powered delegation included the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku; Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye; Executive Director of Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde; along with other senior directors.

Obi Azinge praised the Commission’s interventions in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, and human capital development. In particular, he highlighted the NDDC’s foreign postgraduate scholarship programme, which he said had empowered numerous Niger Delta youths through access to quality education abroad.

He also paid tribute to Mr. Ebie for his service to Delta State, recalling his tenure as Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education and later as Secretary to the State Government.

While commending the Commission, the royal father appealed for more attention to be given to Asaba, especially in addressing perennial flooding and developing public infrastructure. He called on the NDDC to support critical projects that would improve the quality of life for residents in his domain.

Obi Azinge further expressed appreciation to the NDDC for selecting Asaba as the venue for key events marking its 25th anniversary, including a world press conference and a Nollywood movie premiere.

Responding, Mr. Ebie congratulated the monarch on his recent coronation, expressing confidence that his reign would usher in progress for Asaba, both as a traditional kingdom and as the capital of Delta State.

Ebie noted that the NDDC had grown into a leading force in regional development, serving as a model for emerging development agencies in other parts of Nigeria. “We are proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 25 years. As part of our silver jubilee celebrations, we’re engaging communities across the nine Niger Delta states,” he said.

He added that the decision to hold anniversary events in Asaba was a reflection of the town’s rising prominence in the creative industry, calling it “the emerging Nollywood capital of Nigeria.”

The visit was part of a series of engagements to commemorate the NDDC’s 25th anniversary, themed around highlighting achievements and deepening collaboration with stakeholders across the region.
