The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, has confirmed a tragic boat mishap near Kwata, en route to Zumba Market in Shiroro Local Government Area.

The incident reportedly occurred around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, when a boat carrying both goods and passengers capsized.

In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Special Duties, Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini, it was disclosed that the boat’s operator and a few passengers were rescued. One of the survivors is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Kuta.

While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, search and rescue efforts are ongoing, involving NSEMA officers, local divers, and community volunteers.

Authorities noted that despite the distribution of life jackets by the Niger State Government, the National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), many riverine dwellers continue to ignore safety protocols. This non-compliance has contributed to the high number of fatalities recorded in boat mishaps.
