The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), who passed away earlier today.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Sunday in Abuja, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR).
According to the statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the holiday is part of the seven days of national mourning earlier declared by President Tinubu to mark the passing of the late statesman.
The Minister noted that the public holiday serves as a mark of respect for Buhari’s decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, both as a military leader and two-term civilian President, as well as for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation and national development.
> “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
The Federal Government also directed that the national flag continue to fly at half-mast in all public buildings and establishments throughout the seven-day mourning period, starting from Sunday, July 13.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to honour the memory of the late President by embracing peace, unity, and patriotism, in line with Buhari’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria.
The government extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
President Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 83, is remembered for his disciplined lifestyle, anti-corruption stance, and commitment to national unity.
