As the Nigerian Army marks its 162nd anniversary, it reflects on a legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to national and regional security. This milestone highlights the Army’s enduring role in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and contributing to peace efforts beyond its borders.
In a statement commemorating the occasion, the National President of the Northern Consensus Movement, Dr. Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, praised the Army for its achievements and lauded the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.
“Under the leadership of COAS Oluyede, the Nigerian Army has remained resolute in combating terrorism and other security threats. His vision has enhanced operational capabilities and prioritized the welfare of personnel,” Dr. Awwal stated.
He traced the Army’s origins to 1863, with the formation of the “Glover Hausas” by Lieutenant Glover of the Royal Navy, noting that the Army has since grown into a formidable institution, playing key roles in global conflicts, internal security operations, and peacekeeping missions across Africa.
Dr. Awwal commended the Army’s ongoing transformation agenda under General Oluyede, highlighting its dual focus on improving operational readiness and enhancing soldiers' welfare. He added that these reforms have helped the Army deny terrorists and criminals the ability to undermine Nigeria’s stability or disrupt its socio-cultural fabric.
Despite significant security challenges, the Army has risen to the occasion, contributing to regional stability and safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity. “The Army’s commitment to peace, stability, and national unity remains unmatched,” he said.
To commemorate its 162nd anniversary, the Nigerian Army has lined up a series of civil-military activities, including the commissioning of community development projects, a golf tournament, free medical outreach, and charity programs—demonstrating its continued dedication to community engagement and national development.
“The Army is not just a fighting force but a pillar of hope for the Nigerian people,” Dr. Awwal noted. “Its efforts have gone beyond combat to include humanitarian and development initiatives.”
He expressed special appreciation to General Oluyede for his visionary leadership and congratulated the Nigerian Army on reaching this historic milestone.
As the Army looks ahead, it remains poised to continue its tradition of excellence, anchored in discipline, professionalism, and patriotism. With General Oluyede at the helm, the Nigerian Army is expected to build on its successes and maintain its vital role in securing the nation's future.
