The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has approved the appointment of Prof. Abdullahi Abubakar as the Acting General Manager of the ABU Estate Management Company. The appointment, which takes immediate effect, is for an initial period of six months pending the establishment of a permanent management structure for the company.

The ABU Estate Management Company, a registered subsidiary of the university, is tasked with overseeing the management, maintenance, and optimisation of the institution’s real estate assets. These include staff quarters, rental properties, commercial buildings, and lands located both within and outside the university’s campuses.

Prof. Abubakar, a respected architect, is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design and a former Head of the Department of Architecture. His appointment, according to the Vice-Chancellor, is part of the university’s broader efforts to reposition its strategic service units for improved efficiency, transparency, and financial viability. In the official letter announcing the appointment, Prof. Ahmed cited Abubakar’s professional standing and leadership experience as key reasons for his selection, expressing confidence in his ability to restore accountability, enhance service delivery, and introduce innovative practices within the company.

As Acting General Manager, Prof. Abubakar is expected to ensure the effective management of the university’s residential and commercial properties across its campuses and satellite locations in Zaria, Kabba, Kano, Jos, Abuja, and Lagos. He is also to conduct a thorough audit and inventory of ABU’s land assets across the country, while collaborating with the University Management Committee to update existing Certificates of Occupancy and secure legal documentation for properties without them.

Additionally, he is expected to develop a structured framework to engage students in the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and internship programmes through the company’s operations. The initiative is aimed at offering students valuable practical training while creating opportunities for them to earn modest stipends through their involvement in facility management, design support, and maintenance activities.

While congratulating Prof. Abubakar on his new role, the Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that his leadership would mark a new era of transformation and service excellence for the ABU Estate Management Company.
