President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor, members of the Governing Council, and principal officers of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoniland in Rivers State.
This was contained in an official statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
According to the release, Professor Don Mon Baridam, a renowned scholar in Management with specialization in Organisational Behaviour, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Prof. Baridam is from the South-South region and previously taught at the University of Port Harcourt.
Also appointed is Professor Chinedu Mmom, who will serve as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the university. A professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Mmom is also a former Rivers State Commissioner for Education.
Other members of the Governing Council, drawn from various regions of the country, include:
Mr. Emmanuel Onoja – North Central
Mr. Hamid Adekunle – South West
Professor Chima Oji – South East
Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda – North West
In addition to the governing council, President Tinubu also appointed key principal officers to oversee the university’s administration:
Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas (South-South) – Registrar
Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (North Central) – Bursar
Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. (South-South) – Librarian
The appointments, the statement said, are part of the federal government’s commitment to promoting excellence in education, with special attention to environmental science and technology in the Niger Delta region.
“The new university will admit its first cohort of students in September 2025,” the statement noted, adding that President Tinubu had signed the bill establishing the university into law on February 3, 2025.
Describing the appointees as “a team of professionals carefully selected to lay a solid academic and administrative foundation,” Mr. Onanuga stated that the President expressed full confidence in their ability to deliver on the university’s core mission.
“With these appointments, the Federal Government has set the tone for academic excellence, environmental sustainability, and national inclusiveness,” the statement added.
The university is expected to play a critical role in addressing environmental challenges in Ogoniland and the broader Niger Delta through research, innovation, and education.
