The Niger State House of Assembly has urged Governor Umar Bago to issue an executive order banning “Marker’s Day” and sign-out celebrations across all secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, who warned that the events have increasingly been associated with unruly behaviour, misconduct, and immoral activities.
Supporting lawmakers argued that the celebrations have shifted students’ focus away from their academic responsibilities, fostering a culture where parties and public displays take precedence over learning. They also expressed concern over the growing incidents of gangsterism, indecent acts, and carnival-like excesses linked to such occasions.
The House pledged to work closely with the governor and the Ministry of Education to ensure that the proposed ban is implemented and enforced across the state.
