The Nigeria Police Academy recently hosted a strategic security lecture series featuring former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Dr. Abdurrahman Ahmad, as the guest lecturer.
Held at the CBN Auditorium of the academy, the event brought together senior officers, directors, departmental heads, and cadets to reflect on the evolving challenges of policing in modern-day Nigeria.
The lecture series, inspired by the vision of the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, offered a valuable platform for Dr. Ahmad to share his deep expertise and experience. The event was hosted by the 24th Commandant of the Academy, AIG Patrick A. Atayero, who was represented by the Deputy Commandant.
Delivering a lecture titled “The Challenges of Policing in Modern Nigeria,” Dr. Ahmad underscored the complexities and shifting dynamics of law enforcement in a rapidly changing society. He emphasized the need for the police to adapt to emerging trends and technologies while tackling the root causes of insecurity across the country.
According to him, professionalism remains the cornerstone of building public trust and confidence in the police force. He stressed that this requires an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and accountability. Dr. Ahmad also addressed operational challenges such as inadequate equipment, limited training opportunities, and poor welfare conditions for officers.
The lecture further highlighted the critical role of leadership development within the force. Dr. Ahmad maintained that effective leadership is essential for institutional success, requiring a well-rounded blend of knowledge, skills, and experience.
In recognition of his impactful presentation, the Commandant of the Police Academy, AIG Patrick A. Atayero, presented a plaque of honour to Dr. Ahmad, commending his unwavering dedication to the advancement of the police force and his readiness to share knowledge.
The audience, comprising both officers and cadets, received the lecture with great enthusiasm, describing it as insightful, thought-provoking, and deeply relevant to the present-day realities of policing.
The Nigeria Police Academy’s strategic security lecture series continues to serve as a critical platform for professional development. By inviting subject-matter experts and experienced practitioners, the academy aims to foster dialogue, encourage knowledge-sharing, and support strategic thinking within the police force.
Such initiatives are essential in promoting a culture of excellence and integrity while shaping practical strategies to tackle Nigeria’s complex security landscape.
As the Nigeria Police Force continues to confront persistent security threats, Dr. Ahmad’s lecture stands as a rallying call for innovation, accountability, and reform. His message to the force was clear: to meet the demands of modern society, the police must remain proactive, professional, and responsive.
Ultimately, the lecture was a timely and valuable contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
