The Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep concern over the recent directive by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to shut down a private radio station, Badeggi FM 90.1, in Minna, describing the action as undemocratic and beyond the governor’s executive powers.
In a statement issued by the State NUJ Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji, after an emergency State Working Committee meeting, the union cautioned the governor to exercise restraint and act in accordance with constitutional and democratic tenets, especially in matters affecting the media.
"The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council, calls on Governor Bago to tread with caution and to respect the role of the media in holding public officers accountable in a democratic society,” the statement read.
The union reminded the governor that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the legal authority to issue, regulate, or revoke broadcasting licenses, emphasizing that any grievances against media establishments must be channeled through the appropriate regulatory body.
“The closure order issued by the Governor is not within his constitutional powers,” NUJ stated. “Such action undermines the legal framework governing broadcasting in Nigeria. We urge His Excellency to formally lodge any complaint with the NBC rather than issue unilateral directives.”
While reaffirming its commitment to press freedom, the NUJ noted that journalists must operate within the ethics of the profession and uphold public trust. The council revealed that a committee led by veteran journalist Pastor Dan Amashingha had recently been set up to review and revalidate NUJ membership in the state, as part of ongoing efforts to promote professional standards.
"We will not support unethical conduct by any media house, but we equally reject arbitrary actions that amount to press gagging,” the union said.
The NUJ further advised the state government to engage the media constructively through partnerships and dialogue, rather than resort to measures that could be perceived as an attack on press freedom.
"We therefore call for the immediate reversal of the shutdown order in the interest of democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of civil liberties,” the union concluded.
