President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Tokyo in the early hours of Tuesday ahead of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), where he is expected to join other African leaders and global partners to discuss investment, innovation, and sustainable development across the continent.

The summit, which runs from August 20 to 22 at the Pacifico Yokohama, will focus on “co-creating innovative solutions with Africa,” with an emphasis on economic transformation, private sector investment, institutional reforms, and regional stability.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, President Tinubu was received at Haneda International Airport at 12:50 a.m. local time by Japanese and Nigerian officials, including Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, and diplomats from the Nigerian Embassy in Japan.

The triennial TICAD summit, launched by the Japanese government in 1993, is co-organised by the United Nations, the African Union Commission, the World Bank, and the UNDP. It alternates between Japan and African countries, with the last edition held in Tunisia in 2022.

While in Japan, Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings with fellow heads of state and participate in high-level sessions with chief executives of Japanese firms operating in or exploring investment opportunities in Nigeria.

TICAD is widely seen as a strategic platform for strengthening Japan-Africa relations, particularly in infrastructure, energy, technology, and human development.

Further details on the president’s engagements are expected in the course of the summit.
