Amnesty International Nigeria has called for an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into the killing of Engr. Abdulraheem Mustapha Abubakar, who died on Friday, August 29, 2025, after being struck by a police vehicle in Kaduna.

Abdulraheem, a postgraduate student at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), was reportedly on his way to attend lectures when he was fatally knocked down by a van allegedly belonging to the Nigeria Police near Garkuwa Hospital junction on Sultan Road.

In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday, Amnesty International Nigeria described the incident as a “horrific killing” and called on authorities to resist any attempt at a cover-up.

“This is not the time for denials and narratives,” the rights group said. “The authorities must also investigate the family’s allegation that the police are attempting to cover up the incident.”

The Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, condemned the killing, calling it part of a wider pattern of state-sanctioned violence and impunity.

“The killing of Abdulraheem yet again shows increasing utter disregard for the sanctity of life,” Sanusi said. “The Nigerian authorities must immediately prioritize opening an investigation that is independent, impartial and transparent.”

The human rights organization emphasized that for public confidence to be maintained, the investigation must be carried out by a body entirely separate from the Nigeria Police Force.

The incident has sparked outrage, especially given Abdulraheem’s profile as a young engineer and student, and the manner in which he was allegedly killed in broad daylight.

Family members and friends have called for justice, accusing law enforcement of trying to suppress the truth. Amnesty International’s statement is expected to intensify pressure on the government to act swiftly and transparently.

As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
