German Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen have officially announced the acquisition of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface from Belgian team Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, on a permanent transfer.

The forward has committed to a five-year contract, binding him with the BayArena club until June 30, 2028. While the specific transfer fee remains undisclosed, sources monitored by THEWILL suggest that Royale Union Saint-Gilloise will receive a payment of €20 million, in addition to bonuses. This swift move by Leverkusen comes in response to an unfortunate injury to Patrik Schick, sidelining him for an extended period.

Boniface’s track record speaks volumes, with his involvement in an impressive total of 34 goals (22 goals and 12 assists) across 55 appearances during the last season for both Bodo/Glimt and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. His performance extended to the Europa League, where he shone as the joint-top scorer with six goals, including a remarkable strike against Leverkusen themselves in the first leg of the quarter-finals. UEFA’s technical study group recognised his brilliance, honouring him with a spot in last season’s Europa Team of the Tournament.

In a statement following the contract signing, Boniface, who will don the number 22 jersey, revealed his excitement about the prospect of joining the renowned German club and contributing to its future success: “A special opportunity I definitely wanted to take up. I’ve already experienced the atmosphere here at the stadium and back then was able to assess the possibilities at this club.

“After our talks, I now know: This is a top club with a brilliant team. I’m really looking forward to playing football here and I want to play my part in the future success of Bayer 04.”
